What is and what isn't NLP?

As more and more people try to run NLP trainings, in recent times there has been an attempt to add more and more non NLP elements to the shopping basket to attract punters. Such elements include glass and fire walking, tapping of various kinds (sadly no "tapping for cash" as evidenced at www.tappingforcash.com) reiki and many other approaches.
IMO none of this is especially good to enhance the reputation of NLP which is often marketed as an instant fix for all life's ills! NLP when correctly used, trancends the hype and marketing found increasingly online and can really help people in both therapy and business, when properly applied.

Have a Cool Yule

Derren Brown and NLP

Many people see Derren Brown and think that many of his antics involve using NLP, which actually is not the case. Derren lives in the Bristol area and only ever did one NLP training back in late 1997, which was
the NLP Prac in London. Parts of this event were released on one of
the now deleted State of the Art videos and Derren can clearly be seen in the audience! I did my own NLP training (as did Tina) in March 1999 when Michael Breen a co trainer at that event commented (when being asked about Derren) "He's one of ours" which was a bit of an exaggeration (you mean NLP trainers exagerate? LOL) as he was simply one of hundreds of delegates on one single London event, known then as Darren V Brown...

Prior to this Derren had an avid interest in stage magic and sleight
of hand and many of this supposed NLP based demos are actually nothing of the sort and use more mentalism and misdirection. Many NLP forms are full of speculation about his NLP skills and although he has used NLP, its not his main tool kit.

The best example of one demo where NLPers often are "misdirected into believing that he is *doing NLP* is the betting demo shown on C4 TV, where he claimed a 100% success rate on betting

Here is the actual explanation (thanks to wikepedia)

The show was based around the idea that a system could be developed to predict the outcome of horse races with total accuracy. Cameras
followed an ordinary member of the public, Khadisha, as Brown
anonymously sent her correct predictions of 5 races in a row, before
encouraging her to place as much money as she could on the 6th race.

To demonstrate the system to the viewer Brown tossed a coin showing 10 heads in a row to prove it was not impossible, just highly improbable.

After Brown had placed a bet of £4,000 of Khadisha's money on a horse in the final race, he explained that The System didn't really exist.
He had started by contacting 7,776 people and split them into six
groups, giving each group a different horse. As each race had taken
place 5/6ths of the people had lost and were dropped from the system.
Far from Brown knowing which horse would win, he had a different
person backing each horse in each race, and it was simple logic that
meant that one individual, who happened to be Khadisha, won five times in a row. This was similar to the coin flipping earlier: rather than having a predictive technique, Brown had simply tossed a coin repeatedly until 10 heads had come up in a row, taking over nine hours to produce the required film. Brown expressed the opinion that the principle behind The System (essentially confirmation bias) is what is behind belief in spiritualism or homeopathic and alternative medicine.

After the selected horse in the final race lost, and Khadisha was
convinced that she had lost all her borrowed money, Brown told
Khadisha to look again at the betting slip in her hand. The ticket
showed the winning horse's name, meaning Khadisha kept her stake and
received winnings of £13,000. Brown explained that he had decided to
bet for a different horse when he got to the booth.

I had some communications with Derren's agent a few years ago when I
got a more detailed explanation of his views on NLP, some of which are in his recent "Tricks of the Mind" book where he is less than
complimentary about NLP courses!

He is more interested in mentalism than NLP and his first two books
Absolute Magic and Pure Effect show much of how he achieves his
tricks. Interestingly since his first TV appearance in 2000 on C4 both
books are now quite valuable and out of print...

The skilled NLP Developers often not mentioned...

Many people when first introduced to NLP get to know about Bandler and Grinder, but are not so aware of many equally skilled individuals who have been instrumental in developing the field! When I was in the USA running some workshops, I was fortunate enough to meet a number of longstanding NLPers who have been around since day 1 of the creation of NLP.

At www.nlpmp3.com I have deliberately ensured that the developers of NLP are represented alongside the big names that tend to attract followers! IMO many of these developers like Steve Andreas and David Gordon provide invaluable insights and truly excellent workshops. Lets remember that the co creators of NLP studied a series of different therapists and my advice to students of NLP is to study and learn from a variety of trainers rather than simply "follow" one trainer, no matter how well known!

I have often pointed out the difference between education using NLP and "entertainment" where courses are promoted almost as 18 - 30 holiday packages, rather than a real opportunity to learn with a focus on skill development...

Provoking the Americans in San Francisco

On day 3 of IASH I had the opportunity to do a presentation on Provcative Therapy from an NLP perspective. Ideally I would like to have done this slot first on Fri, as it would have been a more logical preface to the Provocative Change series of approaches. At the start of the day in front of hundreds of IASH attendees Frank Bourke who is heading the Research project in the USA to my amazement reference my Provocative Change work as cutting edge work. Steve Andreas had also been telling everyone to see me, so the result was that the 2nd prentation was the most sold out workshop of the 3 days and a stack of people couldn't get in the room including Steve Andreas!

Many of the delegates were longstanding NLPers and included Charles Faulkner (who I also interviewed) and the heads of NLP NY, as well as the heads of NLP Comprehensive. I never get any nerves before presentations, but I really did feel that I had to crank it up, considering who was present. The slot went great, the challenge being to get a clear message across. As usual I use demo subjects and with PT even more than NLP you never know what will happen, especially as I have cut the demo time and exercise down to just 4 minutes!

The result was as good as I could have hoped and resulted in some very interesting discussions re future work, including a formal invite to present at the next IASH event. I was really surprised at the high quality of NLP skills from those present. Many delegates not only had trained with a range of NLP trainers, but are refreshingly not territorial about NLP and were also very aware of the primary influences on NLP. It was also an international audience and a very different dynamic from what I have experienced at London events. People were more focussed on what could be done with NLP, than personality appreciation. This meant that many of the assembled were established in their own fields, including education, medicine, sales, marketing and other fields. There were no "happy clapper NLPers" in sight and it was a real pleasure to interview a number of presenters and to network with people from across the UK. I also learned a stack of stuff and this was by far the most thought provoking NLP event I have attended for at least the last 5 years!

Presenting at the IASH USA conference day 1

Yesterday was the first presentation of two slots for the IASH conference in the USA. The challenge for me was to condense the PCW material down into a 90 minute slot and I reckon I did a pretty good job, with 4 demos and also getting the group to practice a PT exercise. This was the first ever presentation in the USA, so I was curious to see how it would go!

It was a packed room and kind of strange to have people videoing me and a bunch of folks with laptops taking notes! I am impressed with the IASH presenters and certainly am getting great feedback about the PCW approach! There are a lot of major names in NLP here, including Robert Dilts and Steve Andreas and its useful to remember that there are trainings and perspectives in NLP from across the globe and not just with Bandler and Grinder. Its also been fascinating to meet a number of people who knew RB before NLP and who were there from the absolute start of he field. There are lots of myths about the origins of NLP and so its great to hear from those who were there rather than just a single version of events!

Today I have a day off and tomorrow I'm presenting on NLP and PT. I have already been ashed about trainings in the USA, so as with all things, we'll see, but on current evidence that idea appeals, especially when its such great weather!

Frank Farrelly influence on NLP

NLP and Provocative Therapy

Frank Farrelly met Bandler and Grinder after they had published Frogs into Princes. Bandler especially was keen to meet Frank and recorded a whole weekend of Frank working including all the breaks between the actual event. Bandler has always credited Frank as being one of the few therapists who was "doing something" and in 2007 during one of my interviews with RB, he talked about Frank at length and how he first came across his book in a Berkley bookstore.

Richard commented

"Farrelly had to be one of the most courageous people on the face of the earth to do the wackiest things he did."

Some NLPers "don't get Frank" but Richard and John certainly did and in "Frogs into Princes" they described him as "a really exquisite example of requisite variety."

In recent years I have hosted many of Frank's events and attended Provocative Therapy workshops on numerous ocassions. Many NLPers are too in their "NLP heads" and some even believe that the whole PT approach is just being rude to clients, which of course is quite ludicrous. More skilled NLPers like Dr Graham Dawes appreciate that there are many levels to the way in which Frank works and in his "Bermuda Triangle of the Mind" (found at http://www.provocativetherapy.info/) Graham describes the different dimensions of Frank's approach.

Provocative Therapy in action

Provocative Therapy can be described in terms of NLP, but pre dates NLP by over a decade as Frank was first using this approach in 1963. My view is that Bandler in particular was influenced by Frank and when I first saw Frank in 2004 I was amazed by many of the similarities in their attitudes. PT works very much in "the here and now" and many skilled NLPers like Anka Konemann (interviewed on http://www.associationforprvocativetherapy.com/) who had trained extensively with Robert Dilts have followed his work for many years and in her case acted as a translator.
See Frank Live in the UK
Tranceforming NLP have hosted Frank since 2005 and will doing so again in 2008 - see http://www.tranceformingnlp.com/provocative_therapy_frank_farrelly_workshop_leeds_uk.php
and this is an opportunity to see a real master of communication in action. Some delegates will also have the opportunity to have a one to one session with Frank hmself.

The Association for Provocative Therapy and PT Products
I set up TheAssociation for Provocative Therapy with Frank's endorsement to promote PT in the UK. Many NLPers have already begun to attend Frank's events and to exband their skills. When I first met Frank there were no CDs or DVDs, but now there are a host of different products which can be purchased from http://www.provocativetherapy.info/

Endless web work and some great quotes

Updating websites is a major consumer of time. Its a bit like keeping a house in good repair, without constant attention sites don't get listed and people don't visit. This month I added another 11,000 works to www.nickkemp.com including excerpts from the last RB interiew as well as a number of quotes I collected from him over the years. Here are a few favourites

"People always tell me with absolute certainty that they don't trust themselves"

"All we are ever doing is putting things together or taking things apart¦"

"We take the very best of what people do, synthesise it down, make it learnable and share it with each other - and that is what the real future of what NLP will be and its gonna stay that way!"

"If your world isn't moving a hundred times faster than your client, then you're not going to see the other person's patterns. You won't have the time to observe them or replay their behaviour to detect their patterns."

Richard Bandler co creator of NLP interview excerpt

Interview with Richard Bandler co creator of NLP by Nick Kemp

Richard Bandler - I've always talked about NLP as an evolutionary tool. You know, because certainly at the bottom line, people do it to get rid of a phobia or they do it so that, you know, they can motivate themselves a little better. But as soon as you start thinking about your thinking, then you have a whole other level of consciousness that didn't exist. Because now, when you start making choices about which tone of voice you talk to yourself in and where this picture is, and if you have a belief you don't like, the fact that you can dissolve it... Cos if you can get rid of one fear with a phobia cure, you can get rid of five.
And then you have to do something else, because it's not enough to just take something away; you have to put something in its place. Which brings us to design human engineering and the swish pattern. And as soon as you start thinking about, 'Well, if I'm going to take this away, then I'm going to put this up,' you start building propulsion systems and, of course, what are propulsion systems? They're designer states of consciousness. And as soon as you design new states of consciousness, then you can have new thoughts and therefore people get more freedom.
You know. Ultimately when people first - Like this practitioner group that's going on downstairs. These people are - All the notes they give me are about, 'How do I get rid of this pain?' When you start getting to the Master Prac by the end of that, after people knock out most of their pain, then they start going, 'Well, what can I do that's good?' They start going: 'Well, I'm much smarter.' Cos like you said, where you could never conceive of being so successful as an NLP trainer. I remember when you started. You were not a man of confidence! [Laughter] You know. You were one of those guys that starts out that, you know, you got a lot of crappy messages when you were young and weren't so sure of yourself and stuff, but as soon as you start doing things that work, you start sitting up straighter. You start asking the question, 'Well,' you know, 'I didn't used to think I could do this and now I can.' And you start going, 'Well, how crazy could I get?' [Laughter] You know, you're on TV for 27 weeks, you got clients coming out of the wall, you got all this stuff... And it's not just you: this is going on all over the planet.
I grew up in the first age of information. As Gregory Bateson, you know, said to me once- You know, because when- All of his students obviously attacked me, because they didn't know Bateson and I were friends. And when the Structure of Magic was sent to people, even Jay Haley said, "No-one's going to be interested in this. And obviously you don't understand Bateson's work." And Bateson said, "We succeeded where they failed." It's in the introduction of the Structure of Magic. Because Bateson, [Laughs] unlike his students, wasn't attached to his theory. He looked at me and he said, "Why didn't I do this?" and I said, "You couldn't have, Gregory, because the mathematics hadn't been invented yet." There was no cybernetics; there was no information science. Given what he did in those years, it was absolutely a genius step. I mean, he was a brilliant man. He invented the field of heuristics. If it wasn't for him, I couldn't have come along. But the tools that I had at my disposal - the fact that I knew how to program and model human behaviour so a computer could do it - meant that I could model human behaviour so another human could do it. And, you know, coming from a scientific background instead of a psychological or a sociological background, I wasn't looking for causes. I was looking for solutions, and it's a totally different thing. Who cares why a computer can do something? It either can or it can't. And if it can't get to the end, it freaks. It just doesn't get to the end. It doesn't go to the end and lie to you and go, 'Well, it really is the right answer,' even though it's not working. It either works or it doesn't!

Two NLP accreditations for all Tranceforming NLP students

All Tranceforming NLP courses are now fully accredited with both The Society of NLP (SNLP) and ANLP. On certification all students automatically become full ANLP members (one year's initial membership) and members of Richard Bandler's longstanding NLP Society, first created in the 1970s.

NLP Prac v Master Prac

The difference between the NLP Prac and the Master Prac is that the Practitioner is an opportunity to uncover the NLP tool kit and to begin to explore the key principals of using NLP in different contexts. The Master Practitioner is an opportunity to extend this awareness and begin to learn about using NLP in a more multi layered manner and with an increasing amount of sophistication. The NLP Master Prac also includes the SOM weekend from Doug O Brien and a day on either applications of NLP in therapy or business. As with all Tranceforming NLP trainings the emphasis is on skill development and teaching occurs in small groups to ensure everyone receives the very best attention.

Online Resources

In 2005 I set up http://www.nlpmp3.com/ which was the first independant site to offer free NLP interviews and articles from all schools of NLP. To date we have Richard Bandler. Steve Andreas, Michael Breen, myself, Frank Farrelly, Sue Knight, Doug O Brien, John LaValle and many others. All interviews are unedited and we have some pdfs of interviews also as downloads.

NLP - Entertainment v Learning opportunites

When I first learned about NLP in the 1990s the emphasis was very much on learning and devlopment and even though the workshops were "entertaining" the focus was definately on development of the NLP skill set. In recent years I have noticed that there is a definate drift towards entertainment rather than learning, which IMO has not helped to position NLP as a credible set of tools. The internet abounds with claims from indviduals offering newer brighter NLP, often lumping in all manner of new age approaches which of course have nothing to do with real NLP. Fortunately there are still quality trainings out there and I set up http://www.nlpmp3.com/ to provide a voice above the some of the craziness that frequents the newsgroups! Some of the smartest and best minds are still offering trainings and long may they do so!

Become an NLP Practitioner

This Oct 3 - 5, 17 - 19th we are running another NLP Practitioner course. This is the most popular of all certified events and is endorsed by Richard Bandler the co creator of NLP. Full details can be found at

and the course "opens up the NLP tool kit" with an emphais on using these tools rather than talking about NLP! Many people are surprised at just how much they learn during this event and how useful it is in daily life, regardless of whether you want to attend to personal development reasons or to use these tools in a business context

Hosting Frank Farrelly in the UK

I first met Frank Farrelly in 2004 and was immediately blown away by his level of skills. Both Richard Bandler and John Grinder was influenced by Frank in creating NLP in the 1970s and I inteviewed both Richard and Frank about each other on http://www.nlpmp3.com/.
Tranceforming NLP began hosting Frank in 2005 and have done so every year since then. Frank will be in the UK Nov 1 & 2nd in 2008 for his annual weekend event ( see http://www.tranceformingnlp.com/)

In 2004 I was amazed that there were so few resources for PT and have set up http://www.provocativetherapy.info/ and http://www.associationforprovocativetherapy.com/ to provide more information on Frank's work

John LaValle day 3

Today was the final day of this excellent seminar. John covered a huge amount of key information and added in a whole section on time which I have not come across in any previous NLP trainings!
I have seen John at many trainings, but this was IMO the best to date!

John LaValle day 2

Today we covered a whole bunch of material that I didn't find in John's previous workshops. As with yesterday this was roller coaster stuff and we ran from 9.30 right throught to 7pm with a truly wonderful closed eye process at theend because "John doesn't do hypnosis..."

LOL

John LaValle day 1

Yesterday was an absolutely jam packed fascinating day at the John LaValle
Persuasion workshop in Leeds.
I have seen John teach persuasion many times including in the USA in 2000 and in Dublin 2004, BUT this is a whole new level with even more essential information than previously!
